Packing List (Peru 2018)

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

At the end of 2017 I had to sit down and really think about the kind of person I want to be and what I have to do to get there. Not in the sense of New Year's Resolutions but as a permanent life overhaul. Part of that was the consideration that I want to travel more and, since I like the idea of celebrating things the "right" way, I wanted to incorporate travel and being someplace new on New Year's Eve and Day. Which is how I ended up booking a trip to Peru for December that would leave me in Machu Picchu for New Year's Eve and New Years Day (See "Peruvian New Year Traditions for more information on that).

The world is not the same all over and you have to keep that in mind when packing for a trip so, after a lot of consideration of climate and research on different things, like how December is summer in Peru but also the rainy season, here is my pre-trip pack list. Maybe when I get back I'll post a more comprehensive "recommended pack list" but for now this is what you get.

Clothing

- 1 pair jeans

-2 pair leggings

-5 shirts

-10 pair socks and 10 pair underwear (I can rewear a lot of things but not those)

-Sweater

-Secret Pocket scarf. (GUYS! It is a scarf with a secret pocket in it! This is good for hiding things like a passport or some emergency cash. I love things with pockets in them.)

-Vest (Did I mention my love for pockets? I have a safari vest that I like to hike in and go on adventures in and the best part is it has pockets for DAYS!)

-Poncho (Rainy season)

-Tights and Dress (Since I will be there for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day I plan on participating in several of their traditions one of which puts a lot of emphasis on what you wear on New Year's Day so I have an outfit all picked out.)

-Warm Pajamas

Assorted toiletries

Photography

(I like working with film and I'm trying to improve my photography so I researched this one a lot)

-OM-1 (this is my main camera, it is a vintage film camera that I stole from my dad.)

-Instax Mini 9 (Peru only allows you to bring two cameras into the country unless you have special permission and pay a fee so I have chosen my vintage camera and my instant camera, no digital this time around)

-5 Rolls Color Film

-5 Rolls Black and White Film including ISO 3200 for New Years Eve and Sunrise at Machu Picchu (Peru also only allows you to carry in 10 rolls of film so I have carefully gone through my itinerary and made sure of what film I want to use on what particular day and I have tried to select a good variety)

-10 Instax film packs.

Travel and Chronic Pain Needs

(Unfortunately I have a chronic pain issue that I have to consider when making travel plans but fortunately there is a lot of information out in the world from other women in my condition)

-Pain medication (enough for whole trip)

-Neck Pillow (for sleeping on planes, trains, and automobiles)

-Stick on heating pads (the kind Shaq advertises. They are good for pelvic pain on airplanes and in other situations where a heating pad is not an option)

-Spanish phrases (I do not speak Spanish so I have asked a good friend of mine who's first language is Spanish to write out some of the phrases I will need on 3x5 cards so I can carry them with me, in all of my pockets, in case of an emergency).

-Passport (obviously)

-Refillable water bottle

As far as I know that is it. That's everything I need and if it isn't its only 10 days, I think I'll survive.
