On Our Relationship With God Part Two

God Cares About Our Lives

When something big happens in our lives we tend to react with prayer. We share in our small groups about our friend who is in the hospital, or a family member with cancer, or that $3000 medical bill you just received (Clearly, I am assuming we are all infirm and lead “churchy” lives.). The same is true for our testimonies. We only talk about the big things that have happened and when “nothing” has happened to us we claim we don’t have a story of how God has transformed our lives. I mean, really, that’s what we have a god for, right? God is for the big things that really matter, not that last quarter you need for the parking meter in Seattle. And really, how dare you go before God, the creator of the universe, with anything less than an 8.5!

Katie, don’t waste God’s time with your sick cat. Nobody wants to hear about how God reunited you with your lost dog.

Okay, first of all, you weren’t there!

Second, I do not think God sees being in a relationship with us as a waste of time.

2nd Kings 6:4-7

So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, “alas my master! It was borrowed.” Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float. And he said, “take it up.” So he reached out his hand and took it.

I could explain so many things about iron being valuable at the time or it being borrowed by a prophet or whatever but let’s be real, it was an axe head. It was not a big deal. I do not think God considered it a waste of time to answer Elisha’s request by altering the laws of physics. That is because Elisha was in relationship with God and asked with complete faith. God made a miracle happen… for an axe head.

I like that story. It shows a few things that I think are kind of important. First, this story takes place in the old testament. I think sometimes we get caught up in this idea that God is wrathful and angry in the old testament and forgiving in the new testament, but God does not change over the course of time. God created us to be in relationship with us, God wanted to be in relationship with us throughout the old testament and God became flesh and died in order for us to have that relationship. Second, within that relationship God cares about our lives, even the small things.

Our lives are not made up only of big events and hardships, but of lots of little things.
