An Argument for Waiting for a Soul Mate

What is a soul mate, anyway?

The romance industry would have us believe that our "soulmate" is the person who completes us, our "other half." The idea originates in Greek philosophy with the idea that humanity was originally created with two heads, four arms, and four legs. A kind of ridiculous image, when you think about it. Not as ridiculous as thinking that the creator got jealous and split all of the souls in half, cursing humanity to spend eternity searching for our other half, the only relationship that can possibly fulfill each of us.

If that is your idea of a soulmate you will never find them. You will also be putting your relationship with that one perfect person before you, which is wrong.

God does not mean for us to wait for someone who completes us. God did not create us needing to be completed. We were not created long ago then separated from half of ourselves. Instead, we were created individually, knit together in our mother's womb, including our souls (Psalm 139:13, 14).

If we don't need to be completed, does that mean we shouldn't be picky about who we marry or form romantic relationships with?

No. I believe that God cares about who we have relationships with because our relationships on earth reflect our relationship with God. So we should be waiting for a soul mate. Just, not an other half.

The kind of soul mate we should be waiting for is a partner for our soul and the work God has for us on Earth. Someone who shares their soul and their relationship with God with us. We should be waiting for a soul mate to go on the long journey of life. That kind of soul mate will not look the same for everyone; they will be someone you don't have to hie who are from, who will point you toward God. I believe God wants us to wait for that person.

You see, God cares enough about each of us to create us individually, to sacrifice himself in order to have a relationship with us. This same God declared that it was not good for us to be alone. Don't you think God wants you to wait for the right person to walk with?

Not your soulmate but a soul mate. Not just a partner for our life but for our soul.
